Completed my first Park Run at Bedfont Lakes today in just over 33 minutes. The Park Run’s are well worth doing. They are 5K, held usually every Saturday, free to enter and start at 9am – you can click here to see where your nearest one is.
For the statos amongst you the Park Run team keep all your results including PB’s and you gain points for each run to go on a leaderboard. Plus they are as the name suggests in parks so if like me your a pavement pounder it makes a great change and easier on the knees.
Thanks to a very generous soul, my fundraising total for Children with Cancer UK ahead of the Staines 10K now tops over £170 🙂
Big thanks to them and all who have supported/spread the word so far.
Over on the charity auctions for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK a load of requests have gone out to various bands/comedians/sports people I like. Already had a pledge of a signed DVD from John Bishop who completed a grueling cycle/row/run from Paris to London for Sports Relief. A short excerpt of his running:
I was so inspired I am up for another marathon! What a great effort on his behalf and over £3m raised.
One of three kindly donated by the band is now online here will all funds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK – another online now for Children with Cancer UK. Big thanks to Brotherhood Of Man for kindly donating these. More goodies soon!
Nice three mile run completed tonight but it wasn’t half hot mum! Managed to keep running all the way and certainly enjoying my running again, helped by the lighter and warmer evenings.
Tonight’s soundtrack included the mighty Power Quest, Mad Max, Big Country, Donnie Vie and Slam Cartel.
The first signed Danny Peyronal (X-UFO/UFO/Heavy Metal Kids) raised £6.50 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK and the second & final signed CD is online now here. Let’s see if we can beat that total 🙂
More signed goodies soon and as ever any contacts or donated items gratefully received.
Interesting running story on the BBC website saying that Jedward recently completed the Los Angeles marathon without any training. Some question over what time they finished in and if indeed they had done no training. The pair are full of spirit that’s for sure plus will have natural fitness through their youth and energetic stage moves! The London marathon director David Bedford famously entered on the day back in 1981, although he had done many miles in his competitive athletic days.
I have completed three marathons to date – London twice in 1998 and 1999 and the Potteries in 1998 – and I ran lots of warm-up races at 5K, 5 milers, 10K, ten milers and half-marathons. The key I was told by experienced marathon runners is to build up your stamina as it is the time you are out running that can be the real test, that and the infamous wall. Another top tip is the day after a big race and your legs hurt when walking down stairs go backwards down the stairs, much easier.
Good luck to those training for the London marathon a really special day, even if you do get overtaken in the closing stages by a runner wearing a Big Ben costume as I did back in 1998 🙂
For more on this please visit the Make-A-Wish website for my run in May I am planning to wear something suitably golden!
Go Gold is a new addition to the fundraising calendar and we are asking you to persuade your friends, schools, workplaces, and social clubs to hold gold themed events or to wear gold (yellow/orange) on any day in May.
The campaign is being backed by well-known actor Warwick Davis (Willow, Star Wars, Harry Potter), who says: “Make-A-Wish is a brilliant charity and I’m really excited to be involved with the Go Gold campaign. Getting sponsored to wear gold or organising a gold-themed event during May is a really simple way of supporting Make-A-Wish and something that the whole family can get involved with. I hope that everyone will join me in helping this fantastic charity.”
Sarah Shearman, Make-A-Wish Community Fundraising Manager, says: “By taking part in Go Gold you can help Make-A-Wish bring magic, hope, smiles and memories to some very special children. We hope to be granting 1,000 magical wishes this year so every gold pound coin really does help!”
Whether you cover yourself head to toe in gold accessories or simply purchase a Make-A-Wish pin badge, help us to grant magical wishes by going gold!
