This year I was lucky enough again to be selected as a World Book Night giver. I was giving away copies of Mark Billingham‘s excellent crime debut debut crime novel ‘Sleepyhead’.
The day started by giving a copy to one of the ladies in the local Sure Start Centre for all the sterling work she does with the children at my son’s nursery. Then three copies to the local Cafe Nero, to grateful and lapsed readers. If I wasn’t working today I;d have set up camp there to give away my remaining copies.
Then a whole load to various work colleagues who either don’t read much or at all plus a couple of avid readers who have never sampled the delights of Mark Billingham’s books.
Finally my international give away as in the evening I was lucky enough to be able to interview Arjen Lucassen for Get Ready To Rock! A copy of ‘Sleepyhead’ will be winging it was over to Holland 🙂
Another brilliant day handing out books by an author you enjoy and for me it is a real confidence booster as I am very shy. But armed with a good book I am happy to talk to people I wouldn’t normally and share my love of books. If you only read one book this year make it one of the World Book Night ones as you won’t be disappointed.
PS I still have a copy to send to one lucky person who comments on either this post or the other WBN post. Go on don’t be shy!
The John Sinclair tour jacket as worn by him on stage with Ozzy Osbourne in the late 80’s went for £46.45, add to this the Limahl signed copy of ‘Never Ending Story’ (still a live auction and currently at £4.00) means another £50 raised. Mind you hopefully the DVD will top at least £10 and thanks to former Radio 1 DJ Mike Read for kindly retweeting the Limahl Ebay link.
Been busy trying to drum up some more signed items for auction and hopefully will have some more soon.
Slightly off topic but a great day/night where readers of books they love give away free copies of books to those who may never read much, if at all or have not read that particular book. Now in its second year I am again a World Book Night (WBN) giver and have the excelelnt debut crime novel ‘Sleepyhead’ by Mark Billingham to give away:
As a ‘thank you’ to you to readers of this blog I have a copy of the WBN edition of Mark Billingham’s excellent debut crime novel ‘Sleepyhead’ to give away. Simply ‘like’ this post, or better still post the book you would most like to hand out and why. I will pick a winner at random on 1st May (applies to all regardless of where you are located).
Kindly signed and donated by Limahl, a signed copy of ‘The Neverending Story’ DVD. All proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.
You can bid on the item here
The signed CD raised £15 so hopefully this DVD can top that figure.
Thanks to ‘Record Collector’ and their email newsletter for a plug for the John Sinclair tour jacket which finishes this weekend. It is currently at £21.00, a bargain price for a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history. Sign up for the ‘Record Collector’ newsletter here
Thanks to my employer’s A2Dominion they have added a further £50 to the fundraising pot through the scheme whereby they match your fundraising up to £50 for an individual. This is part of their ‘Giving something back’ to the wider community that also includes community engagement programmes, opportunities to volunteer, and caring for the environment. This helps push the total to over £200 so a BIG thanks again to them for this!
The training for the Staines 10K on Sunday May 13th is going okay – completed to 5K Park Runs at Bedfont Lakes in the past few weeks coming in at 33 minutes each time. I did lapse last week being on hols and with my folks visiting but aim to get back running again this week.
With a recent generous donation the total raised for Children with Cancer UK currently stands at £172.66
Over to the charity auctions for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK and the total currently is £267.96.
Online now is a tour jacket as worn by keyboards player John Sinclair (ex-Uriah Heep) during his touring days with Ozzy Osbourne in the late 80’s. Thanks to plugs on Twitter by former Ozzy bassists Rudy Sarzo and Phil Sousson it now stands at £21.00:
The recent signed Limahl CD fetched £15, three signed flyers from the Brotherhood Of Man raised £15 and there are signed items coming soon from comedian John Bishop amongst others.
